Vets Serve Up Pickleball and Purpose in Central Park

Rain may have cut play short, but spirits remained high last Friday as nearly twenty veterans from across New York City gathered in Central Park to break in the new NYC Veteran Pickleball League. Hosted by Fordham University’s Office of Military and Veterans’ Services (OMVS), the launch event offered more than just an introduction to America’s fastest-growing sport—it was a chance to build camaraderie, connection, and community among those who’ve served.

With beginner-friendly coaching provided by CityPickle, participants got a hands-on introduction to the rules, techniques, and teamwork that define the sport. Veterans of all experience levels rallied together, learning serves, scoring, and how to navigate the “kitchen”—until the weather cut the evening short.

“This league is more than just a game—it’s a welcoming space for veterans to connect, recharge, and support one another,” said Matt Butler, executive director of Fordham OMVS. “Through shared activity and community, we’re helping veterans build relationships that can last long after the final serve.”

The NYC Veteran Pickleball League is a biweekly summer series designed exclusively for veterans to stay active and strengthen peer-to-peer support. Led by Fordham OMVS in partnership with Hostos Community College and the University of Mount Saint Vincent, the league is funded by the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services through the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program—an initiative that promotes wellness and social connection among veterans and their families.

Held at Wollman Rink in Central Park, the league includes coaching, open play, and time to unwind with fellow veterans over food and conversation. All equipment is provided, and no experience is necessary.

The next session will take place on Friday, June 20, from 5–7 pm. Individuals who haven’t registered can do so here. For questions or group sign-ups, contact Fordham’s Veteran Center at (212) 636-6433 or veterans@fordham.edu.

Whether you’re looking to compete, connect, or just try something new, the NYC Veteran Pickleball League is serving up something for everyone this summer.
